Direct-to-garment printing

DTG suits gradients, many colors, photographic detail and variable files, provided the garment and ink system are compatible. The operator loads each garment on a platen, checks the surface and pretreatment, prints the color and white channels, then cures to the ink maker's specification.

The garment is part of the printing surface. Knit texture, lint, seams, moisture and platen height all shift droplet placement. Dark garments usually need a white foundation, which thickens the ink build and makes white-to-color alignment visible.

Direct-to-film transfer

DTF splits image production from garment application. The system prints onto film, develops the adhesive layer, processes the transfer, then attaches it with heat and pressure. That helps with awkward locations, mixed garment types and staged inventory.

It also adds film handling, powder control, transfer storage, press consistency, peel condition and edge inspection. Epson's maker-oriented DTG and direct-to-film overview walks through both sequences and the pretreatment each one needs. Those instructions cover Epson's named systems, not every printer or consumable. Follow current guidance for your exact ink, film, powder, garment and press.

Dye sublimation

Sublimation uses heat to move disperse dye from printed paper into a compatible polyester fiber or polymer coating. On the right material the image becomes part of the dyed surface, with no adhesive-backed film and a light hand.

The material limits are strict. Cotton does not become a sublimation substrate because it can enter a heat press. Dark garment color can overpower transparent dyes. High heat also exposes scorching, ghosting and dye migration.

Syracuse University's makerspace separates its dye-sublimation and direct-to-garment equipment rules by substrate: DTG on light cotton, sublimation on light polyester or coated items. Those are facility rules, not universal limits, but they show why a shop records the approved material for each machine.

Screen printing

Screen printing needs several setup stages:

  • separations
  • stencils
  • screens
  • ink setup
  • registration
  • flash stages
  • final cure That setup is disproportionate for one complex sample. Once stable, it holds repeat spot colors, controlled deposits and large quantities.

Artwork drives the screen count. A six-color design carries more plates, more registration relationships and more setup waste than a one-color mark. Halftones extend tonal range only when mesh, stencil, dot structure, ink and press movement hold the detail.

Compare the finished build

Do not judge the first hot sample. Code each candidate, let it cool, and inspect with the same placement datum.

  1. Color, opacity, gradients, detail and edge character.
  2. Hand, stretch, recovery, thickness and surface gloss.
  3. Alignment between white, color, plates or transfer layers.
  4. Garment scorch, shine, shrinkage, seam marks and distortion.
  5. Specified laundering, drying, abrasion and flex tests.
  6. Setup time, cycle time, reject risk, labor, consumables and waste.
  7. Repeatability across sizes, colors, lots, operators and dates.

Keep one unprocessed garment and one approved sample. Write the approval so it names the artwork, garment, process and equipment, plus the consumables and settings used. Add the tests run, the approver and the conditions that keep the approval valid.

Selection guide

Worked example

A 24-piece run of dark cotton tees with a photographic front print points to DTG, if the pretreat and white laydown hold on that blank. The same artwork on 600 pieces, reduced to three spot colors, points to screen printing once the plate cost spreads across the run.

DTF fits mixed compatible garments, staged inventory and awkward placements that justify the extra film and press control. Sublimation fits light polyester and coated surfaces where integrated dye and a light hand matter.

Any method fails through a poor file, an unsuitable garment, uncontrolled heat, weak maintenance or missing inspection. Choose the controlled system, not the familiar label.

Common questions

Is DTF the same as sublimation?

No. DTF attaches a printed adhesive-bearing layer to the garment surface. Sublimation transfers dye into a compatible polyester or polymer surface, so there is no separate film to peel or bond.

Does DTG always feel softer than DTF?

No. Hand depends on ink build, white layer, pretreatment, garment, and transfer construction. It also depends on press settings and design coverage. A heavy white DTG print on a dark tee can feel thicker than a well-pressed DTF transfer.

Is screen printing only economical for large orders?

Not always. Seven things move the break point:

Can one wash test approve every garment color?

No. Fiber, dye and finish vary by color and lot, and heat response differs with them. Define the represented range, then test a sample from each end before you approve.
