Lifting edges, scorch marks, carrier lines and residue trace back to film, adhesive, heat, pressure, peel and care, and each cause has its own fix.

Heat-transfer failures invite one fast response: press it again. That can reattach an edge, and it can also add scorch, shine, adhesive spread, shrinkage and one more undocumented heat cycle. Stop at the written limit and diagnose the build.
Preserve the evidence first
Quarantine output back to the last passing check. Keep the failed garment, the carrier, and an unused transfer from the same batch. Also keep an unprocessed garment, the artwork, and the cutter or print settings. Also keep the press record and the approved first-off.
Photograph the full graphic, the placement, the garment features and close detail under stable light. Mark where the failure sits against platen edges, seams, pockets, pads and cover sheets. Let the sample cool before you touch it.
Edges lift or areas fail to bond
Map the lift before you change a setting. A repeated line near a seam or platen edge points to contact geometry. Random specks point to lint, debris, incomplete adhesive or a surface finish. A whole edge points to transfer position, heat distribution, pressure, dwell, peel or carrier tension.
Check material and garment compatibility first. Then verify transfer batch and storage. Also check garment moisture and contamination. Confirm press identity, platen and pad condition. Review loading, measured heat, pressure method, dwell, peel state and finishing step. Watch whether the carrier shifted and pulled the hot film.
Visible adhesive at one edge is not proof that more pressure is needed. Excess pressure pushes adhesive outward while a seam or a tilted load leaves another area under-contacted.
Fabric scorches, shines, flattens or shrinks
Compare against an unprocessed garment from the same lot. Record color, surface, dimensions, moisture and finish before and after a controlled heat exposure with no decoration. That separates garment response from transfer color or adhesive.
Check actual heat exposure, platen contact, cover sheet, and pad. Check prepress, cumulative layer presses, and the finishing press. A temperature that is safe for one textile color or finish can mark another. Reduce heat only inside a product-supported route, then compensate with settings the current instructions allow and verify adhesion.
Carrier outline or pressure box remains
A carrier line can come from its own edge, heat, pressure, the cover sheet, garment moisture or a hard transition in the support beneath the fabric. Let the item cool and follow any manufacturer-approved relaxation step before you judge whether the line is permanent.
Trim carrier only when the product permits it and enough margin remains for safe handling. Feathered pads and pillows change pressure and heat delivery, so they need qualification rather than casual insertion. Do not hide a line by brushing or steaming unless that treatment is part of the approved process and care basis.
Garment dye moves into the transfer
Dye migration often shows up as a color cast that develops during or after heating, especially on some sublimated polyester garments. Confirm whether the color sits inside the transfer layer, came from the garment, or is a translucent film over dark fabric.

The page supports the existence of a specialized migration-control film, not a guarantee for every dye, garment, press, design or care cycle. Test the actual textile and allow enough observation time to catch delayed movement.
Controls include a compatible barrier product, a lower-temperature supported system, a different garment, another decoration route, or shorter supported exposure. Added white layers without a tested barrier can still receive migrating dye.
Film cracks, splits or loses detail
Identify whether the crack follows garment stretch, artwork corners, film overlap, texture peaks, a crease or a broad solid area. Compare the unwashed and washed samples. Inspect these factors:
- transfer age
- storage
- cutting damage
- carrier scoring
- pressing
- cumulative heat
- peel
- garment stretch
- care
A film can work on a relaxed garment and fail when fabric stretch exceeds the approved range. A product made for greater elongation may help, but only inside its documented conditions.

Reduce sharp internal corners or unsupported fine bridges when the design allows. Avoid layering products over surfaces the manufacturer excludes. Do not assume thicker material is tougher under flex, because thickness can raise bending stress and change hand.
Adhesive residue, halos or exposed glue
Determine whether residue sits outside the intended film, transferred from a dirty cover sheet, came from the carrier, or spread from an overpressed edge. Inspect the unused transfer and the press surfaces. Check material orientation, cut depth, weed damage, and film and mask pairing.
Check temperature, pressure, dwell, and finishing step.
Do not use an unapproved solvent on a finished garment. It can stain fabric, dissolve print, change flammability or skin-contact conditions, and weaken more adhesive. Quarantine the item and use only a documented rework route that the material and garment support.
Failure appears only after washing
Verify the hold time before laundering and the exact test method. Record detergent, water, cycle and load. Record specimen position, temperature, extraction, drying and number of cycles. Compare against an unwashed control.

- abrasion A failed wash can trace to application, and it can also expose an unsuitable garment, transfer, care claim or test method.
Close the investigation with evidence, a causal statement, the affected range, and the corrected control. Then add a verification sample, the care result, disposition, and approval. If the evidence cannot isolate one cause, design a focused trial rather than choosing the most familiar explanation.
Common questions
Can a lifted transfer be saved with a second press?
Only through an approved rework method. Record the added heat cycle and retest the finished garment before it ships.
Will white HTV stop polyester dye migration?
Not automatically. Opacity and dye blocking are different properties. Use a supported barrier material and test the exact garment.
Why does the transfer crack only when worn?
Garment extension may exceed film capability, or the build may carry cutting, overlap, pressing, aging or care damage. Test under defined stretch.
Is adhesive residue only a cosmetic issue?
No. It can indicate material mismatch, contamination, overprocessing, carrier trouble or exposed adhesive, and it needs disposition under written limits.
