Garment blank problems like dye migration, shrinkage, scorching and mixed batches require separating fabric faults from press faults and testing one variable.
What to take away
- Stop the run, keep the last good unit and the first bad one, and quarantine every uncertain carton before you change a setting.
- A pink cast in white ink is not automatically dye migration. Rule out underbase coverage, wet-on-wet pickup and shop lighting first.
- Measure shrinkage by direction. Length loss and side-seam twist are different faults with different fixes.
- A press mark that fades as the sample cools is moisture. A mark that stays is surface damage.
- Never relabel a garment to make a measurement fit. Hold it and check the blank against the approved graphic.
A failed run gives you evidence, not a verdict. A crooked print can come from placement, a twisted blank, or movement in the wash. Work through controlled comparisons instead of guessing at the press.
First response

Dye migration or color shift
What it looks like
A light print picks up a garment-colored cast, sometimes hours after the press. The garment itself may change shade, or show a boundary shaped like the platen.

Separate the causes
Run four samples side by side: an unheated blank, a blank through the production heat cycle with no decoration, a decorated sample, and a known-good reference substrate. Note when the color appeared on each.
Count every heat event the garment sees, including flash, cure, transfer, post-press and dryer time. Confirm fiber content, dye class, lot, and garment-dyed status. Confirm ink system, blocker, temperature, and dwell. Confirm pressure and the actual surface reading from a contact probe. Use the probe reading rather than the display.
CottonWorks describes textile printing as a sequence: apply print paste, dry to stop smearing and color movement, then fix with process-specific heat or steam. Its printing-process lesson notes that pigments need binder-film formation while disperse dyes need heat to fix.
That frames colorant, fiber, drying and heat as one connected set of variables. It gives no settings for a finished blank.
Corrective path
Cut thermal exposure only inside the ink or film maker's qualified window. Trial a blocker or a different decoration method. If no tested combination passes opacity, cure, appearance and care, reject that blank-color-method pairing.
Shrinkage, growth, twist, or skew
What it looks like
Body length or width moves, side seams rotate, ribs grow, hems wave, or the graphic reads distorted after processing or a home wash.

Corrective path
Confirm the blank specification and lot. Trim unnecessary heat and tension within qualified limits. Ask the supplier for dimensional-change data on that lot. Adjust artwork or patterns only when the movement is stable, measured and written into the product spec. Reject unstable batches.
Scorching, shine, or texture flattening
What it looks like
The pressed area turns yellow, darker, glossier, flatter or harsher, and sometimes keeps a permanent outline.

Inspect the blank's fiber blend, finish, moisture content and dye class. Note whether elastane, seams or folded layers sit under the platen. Dropping temperature usually means a longer dwell, and that longer dwell can still hurt a heat-sensitive material. Whatever window you land on must also cure the ink or activate the adhesive.
Seam and hardware interference
What it looks like
Ink deposit or transfer pressure drops near a seam, a graphic kinks at a pocket, a zipper leaves a void, or a hood makes placement inconsistent.
Put an unprinted garment on the machine and feel the support from underneath. Use a platen, pad, hoop or print location built to isolate the raised feature. Never force metal hardware under heat or pressure without controls from the equipment maker.
If moving the artwork fixes contact but breaks the approved composition, get sign-off. A printable location is not automatically the contracted location.
Inconsistent sizing
Measure coded units from several cartons with one method. Plot each value by size, color, lot and carton. Compare that spread against the supplier tolerance and your printable-area requirement.
Hold the outliers. Do not relabel garments to make the numbers fit. A size can sit inside supplier tolerance and still be too small for the approved graphic, and that means the blank choice and the spec do not match.
Mixed batches
Mixed lots can differ in shade, dimensions, hand, finish, construction and heat response. Segregate by supplier identifiers and receiving records. Where identifiers are missing, build receipt groups and treat equivalence as unproven.
Print and wash coded samples from each group. Release only the groups that pass. When several groups are approved, carry their identities through production so a later complaint can be traced to a carton.
Common questions
Can dye migration be judged as soon as the garment leaves the dryer?
No. Inspect after cooling and again at a defined later interval, and write down both times. Some color shift only becomes visible hours after production.
Is all garment shrinkage caused by heat?
No. Several factors contribute to the process:

- Processing tension
- Wetting
- Drying
- Agitation
- Sewing
- Finishing
- Relaxation Measure under a defined, repeatable sequence so the numbers mean something.
Should a seam-crossing graphic be rejected automatically?
No. It can work with the right platen, support, artwork and an accepted appearance standard. Test the exact construction before you promise it.
Can two batches be mixed after both pass?
Only when their approved results and traceability support it. Keep lot identity in the production record even when both groups meet the same criteria.
