Job and material identity
- Job code, customer, quantity, date, use, and approver recorded.
- Artwork revision, dimensions, orientation, location, and placement datum confirmed.
- Transfer manufacturer, product, color, width, batch, age, and storage status recorded.
- Carrier, liner, application mask, cover, or release media identified.
- Garment supplier style, color, size, fiber label, finish, and lot recorded.
- Current technical sheet, application instructions, safety data, and care limits available.
- Unapproved substitutions separated from production material.
Artwork and cutter
- Paths are closed, duplicates removed, and intended shapes joined.
- Minimum line, gap, counter, dot, corner, and island fit the qualified process.
- Mirroring and material side are correct for the named route.
- Cutter, blade, holder, pinch rollers, cutting strip, and path inspected.
- Material is square, supported, and held by rollers in allowed positions.
- Representative test cut passes before the final graphic.
- Blade, force, speed, passes, offset, and other active settings recorded.
- Cut reaches the transferable layer without unacceptable carrier damage.
Weeding and transfer preparation
- Weeding surface, tools, lighting, and orientation are controlled.
- Every intended island, counter, punctuation mark, and fine detail is present.
- Carrier has no tear, deep score, crease, contamination, or loss of hold.
- Printed transfer ink, profile, drying or outgassing, contour cut, and mask meet current instructions.
- Screen-printed transfer deposit, adhesive, processing, release, and storage pass their plan.
- Finished transfer dimensions match the approved proof.
- Transfer is labeled and protected from mix-up, dust, heat, humidity, and blocking.
Garment and placement
- Correct garment identity and lot confirmed before decoration.
- Fabric is clean, dry, flat, and free from loose lint.
- Heat-response sample covers scorch, shine, shrinkage, texture, finish, and dye movement.
- Seams, collars, pockets, zippers, drawcords, hoods, and thick joins are isolated.
- Appropriate platen, pad, or support is installed under the qualified method.
- Garment is loaded without stretch, fold, twist, or hidden layer.
- Graphic center, height, rotation, clearance, and size-specific placement pass.
- Visible carrier edge is not used as the only placement reference.
Measurement readiness
- Press identity, platen, controller, pad, cover sheet, and pressure method recorded.
- Temperature and time devices have current verification status.
- Measurement range, resolution, method, location, and acceptance limit are suitable.
- Pressure indicator or closure method can distinguish the approved condition.
- Contact uniformity across the graphic area has been checked.
- Readings are recorded with units and device identity.
The NIST Engineering Statistics Handbook defines measurement resolution as the ability to detect and faithfully indicate small changes. It also warns that displayed digits do not by themselves establish instrument resolution. This supports qualifying the measurement system against the job's tolerance instead of copying every screen digit into a record.
Press safety and setup
- Operator is trained and authorized for the exact press.
- Current startup, guarding, emergency, electrical, pneumatic, and burn controls pass.
- Work area is clear and transfer placement does not require entry into a hazard zone.
- Hot surfaces, moving parts, stored energy, and pinch points are controlled.
- Ventilation and material handling follow current safety documents.
- Press reaches a stable approved condition before the first-off.
- Prepress purpose, time, and effect are recorded when used.
Review the installed machine's real motion and energy, because exposures differ among manual clamshell, swing-away unit, pneumatic press, cap press, and conveyor transfer system. Consider loading hands, closing travel, upper-platen swing, automatic opening, and compressed air.
Also consider electrical isolation, hot covers, unstable attachments, and maintenance access. Keep emergency actions usable from the operator position. Document who may clear a jam, change a platen, or enter a guarded area, and which energy-control procedure applies before that work begins.
OSHA's machine-guarding eTool has a section on press hazards and controls. It addresses power-press categories rather than apparel heat presses, so it does not prescribe this equipment's safeguards. It supports the narrower practice of identifying press, point-of-operation, pinch, and control hazards through the applicable machine manual and workplace requirements.
Application sequence
- Transfer is correctly oriented and secured by an approved method.
- Temperature, pressure, time, and any stage sequence match the qualified build.
- Garment and transfer remain still as the press closes.
- Dwell completes without unrecorded interruption.
- Press opens under the safe operating method.
- Carrier is peeled at the named hot, warm, or cold condition.
- Peel direction, angle, and speed meet the process where specified.
- Second press, cover, cooling, or finishing step follows the approved sequence.
Cold inspection and care test
- Garment cools flat before final appearance review.
- Identity, orientation, placement, dimensions, color, detail, edge, and hand pass.
- No lift, gap, crack, carrier line, adhesive residue, scorch, shine, migration, ghosting, or distortion exceeds limits.
- Approved flex, stretch, adhesion, or abrasion test passes.
- Required hold time before laundering is observed.
- Wash and dry method, detergent, load, cycle, temperature, and specimen identity recorded.
- Care-tested sample passes against an unwashed control.
Production release and closeout
- First-off sample, record, operator, and approver identified.
- Inspection interval and stop limits written.
- Checks repeat after stoppage, adjustment, splice, batch change, or press change.
- Suspect output is quarantined back to the last passing check.
- Rework follows a separately approved method and receives full inspection.
- Accepted, tested, reworked, rejected, and unused quantities reconcile.
- Retained garment, transfer, photos, test results, and final configuration are stored.
Common questions
Is the heat press display enough to verify temperature?
No. Define a suitable measurement method, device, range, resolution, locations, and acceptance limits for the process.
Should every garment be prepressed?
Only when the qualified method gives a purpose and condition. Added heat can mark, shrink, or change some fabrics.
Can a carrier be peeled whenever it feels cool?
No. Follow the named hot, warm, or cold peel condition and define how operators recognize it consistently.
What happens after an in-process failure?
Stop, quarantine back to the last pass, preserve evidence, identify affected quantity, correct the cause, and verify a new sample before release.
