Digital apparel printing guide: DTG, DTF, pretreatment, white ink, transfer, cure, and maintenance
How DTG and DTF differ in ink path, pretreatment, white laydown, transfer and cure, and the records that make a repeat order print the same.

Digital apparel printing turns a file into droplets and then into a finished print through chemistry, placement, heat and pressure. DTG and DTF share an inkjet head. Everything after the head differs.
Two process paths that do not interchange
In DTG the garment sits on a platen, gets pretreated for that ink and fabric, is printed, then cured. Ink meets fiber, texture and finish while it is still wet.

In DTF the color and white inks land on film in a set order. Powdered adhesive goes on, excess comes off, and the film is processed before it ever touches cloth.
Sublimation is a third path. It drives disperse dye into polyester or a polymer coating. DTF bonds a printed adhesive film to the fabric. Sharing transfer media does not make them the same process.
Files and the white channel
Log the artwork, final dimensions, pixel dimensions, transparency, and color mode.

Soft shadows, low-opacity edges and transparent pixels can change once a white layer is generated. Check the color channel and the white channel separately.

Qualify the garment before the run

- Avoid multiple layers unless process built for them
Keep collars, pockets, zippers, plackets and multiple layers off the platen or out of the press area unless the process was built for them. A run formed to the wrong length is a return trip with a trailer.
The Nebraska Innovation Studio publishes a specific Epson DTG-DTF printer procedure that separates garment and film workflows and defines local material and equipment conditions. It is a facility procedure for one system, so treat it as evidence that DTG and DTF need distinct steps, then follow the current manual and consumables for the printer in front of you.
Pretreatment is a measured quantity
Pretreatment holds white ink near the surface, lifts color density and supports durability. Applied wrong it leaves stains, crystals, pressure marks, yellowing, uneven hand or poor adhesion.

Apply it with the ventilation, containment and protective controls in the current safety data sheet and facility documents. Water-based does not mean safe to breathe.
White ink needs its own routine
White ink carries dense pigment that settles and can clog narrow ink paths.

Read the nozzle check before a run. Raising ink volume to cover a missing nozzle burns ink and hides a maintenance fault. After any cleaning, print the required verification and log the maintenance consumed.
Building and applying DTF transfers

Verify shelf life. Loose powder outside the image area becomes contamination on the press and on the next garment.
A transfer is not approved on the film. Approval happens after it is pressed onto the named garment, cooled, and inspected. Inspection covers bond, color, gloss, edge and hand.
Cure and press settings you can defend
Follow the current product instructions for time, temperature and pressure. Verify what the garment or film actually saw using the method the product specifies. A controller display reports the platen, not the ink film.
After cooling, inspect for these issues:
- scorching
- dye migration
- shine
- flattening
- press boundary
- pretreatment marks
- transfer edge
- adhesive residue
- opacity
- white-to-color alignment
- fine detail Then run the wash, adhesion, stretch or abrasion test the product requires.
Maintenance and the record that makes reorders repeat
Hold room temperature and humidity inside the printer and ink limits. Keep caps, wipers, capping stations, and encoder areas on the current schedule. Keep platens, carriage path, waste systems and filters on the current schedule. Use approved cleaning fluid and lint-controlled wipes.

A repeat order needs more than the artwork. It needs the configuration that produced the approved piece.
Common questions
Is DTF the same as sublimation?
No. DTF presses a printed adhesive film onto the fabric. Sublimation drives disperse dye into a compatible polyester or polymer surface. The two fail differently and are tested differently.
Does every DTG shirt need pretreatment?
Follow the ink, printer, garment and color workflow you qualified. White ink and many dark or blended substrates commonly need it. The product instructions decide, not a shop habit.
Can a passing nozzle check guarantee print quality?
No. It confirms one printhead condition. Several factors can still spoil the print:

Can a DTF transfer be approved before pressing?
Film-stage checks catch orientation, coverage and powder faults. Finished approval requires pressing onto the actual garment, cooling, inspection and the required durability tests.
