How to qualify a digital apparel print before a production run
Qualify a DTG or DTF build by locking the file, pretreatment, heat press settings and wash test before the run, so the approved sample matches what ships.
What to take away

Qualification asks one question: can this controlled process repeat the specified garment? It is not a hunt for the prettiest print among undocumented trials.
Write the protocol before the first sample
Name the artwork revision. Name the finished dimensions. Name the placement. Name the garment. Name the size and color range. Name the method. Name the quantity. Name the end use. Name the care instructions. Name the approver. Then set the acceptance limits the samples will be judged against.

Also include at least one failing trial and a retained approved unit.
Include enough garments for destructive care tests. Cover the darkest color in the range, any material change, and both size extremes.
A code must connect each garment to these details:
- its file
- queue
- printer
- platen
- consumable lots
- pretreatment
- heat cycle
- operator
- time For DTF, give the printed film and the applied garment related but separate codes.
A code that stops at the garment number tells you nothing when a wash test fails three weeks later. It has to reach the ink lot and the press.
Verify the garment before it sees ink
Check supplier style, fiber content on the label, color, and size.
Also check batch, fabric face, surface hair, finish, and seams.
Then check dimensions, moisture, and heat response. Map the flat print or press area with a template.
Record any pretreatment already present on purchased print-ready blanks. That factory treatment is part of the substrate, and it changes how your own pretreatment behaves.
Condition and measure the control garment. Photograph its surface and shade under the same light you will use for every sample. A defect already on the blank must not be charged to the printer later.
Release the file and RIP setup

Print a target that carries solids, fine positive and negative detail, gradients, neutrals, white edges and real image content. One forgiving photograph will pass almost any setup.
Prepare the printer
Record room temperature and humidity, ink status, use-by dates, agitation or circulation, and waste capacity. Also record cleaning-fluid status, maintenance schedule, platen condition, and the nozzle-check result. Clear missing nozzles using the current manufacturer procedure before you print a sample.
The School of Visual Arts Visible Futures Lab describes its DTG printer as an inkjet system that prints straight onto fabric. It notes heat setting, and says white printing on dark fabric uses chemical pretreatment there.
Its DTG equipment guidance covers one lab and one machine, but treats substrate, white ink, pretreatment, file and heat as one connected setup.
Run the DTG trials
Apply the exact pretreatment under its safety controls. Record the product, dilution, target mass, and coverage. Record the actual result, application path, and drying method. Record the press sheet, time, temperature, and pressure. Record the interval before printing.
Load the garment without stretching. Keep seams and loose fabric clear of the platen edge. Print the coded test at the defined queue and log whatever ink-use or coverage data the RIP reports.
Cure through the approved dryer or press path and verify the condition the maker specifies. Inspect after the print cools, because pretreatment marks look different wet, hot and conditioned.
Run the DTF trials
Check film side, film lot, print order and white alignment. Check adhesive lot, powder coverage, excess removal and processing. Then check cooling and storage. Reject film with banding, contamination, weak white, powder outside the image or damaged edges before it reaches the press.

Inspect, then test
Use the same light, ruler, overlays and viewing distance for every sample. Check:

- Pretreatment boundary, staining, crystals
- Transfer edge, residue, lifting, texture
- Garment shine, scorch, distortion, dye shift

Then run the care sequence named on the label. Record the washer or method, detergent, load size, and water temperature. Also record the drying method, cycle count, conditioning, and post-test measurements.
Compare cracking, peeling, fading, and staining against the limits you wrote at the start. Also compare edge lift, hand, and garment shape against those limits. AATCC and ASTM publish the standard test methods for colorfastness, crocking and durability; use the method the buyer or brand already recognizes.
Worked example: a failing white on a black tee
A shop qualifies a white-on-black DTG build. The first trial passes color and placement but shows a chalky halo at the print boundary after one wash cycle.
The code on that garment points to one pretreatment lot and one drying interval. The next trial holds the same file, ink and press settings and changes only the pretreatment mass and drying time.
The halo clears. The shop freezes that pretreatment mass and drying interval as part of the approved configuration and adds a pretreatment weight check to the first-off inspection.
Freeze the passing configuration
Approve, conditionally approve, hold or reject each trial. The final record names the garment and batch, file and RIP, printer, and maintenance status. It also names the environment, pretreatment or transfer components, and settings. It covers heat equipment, inspection results, tests, and deviations. It ends with the approver and date.
Keep the untouched control and the approved finished sample. Build a first-off and in-process check plan for production. Qualification narrows the uncertainty; it does not remove the need to watch the run.
Common questions
How many samples are enough?
Enough to cover the control, process trials, destructive tests, color and size risks, batch variation and the cost of a failed run. There is no universal number, and a cheap order rarely justifies the sample set a contract order does.
Can a good test print on paper qualify the printer?
No. Paper tells you the data path and the nozzles are working. It says nothing about garment surface, pretreatment, transfer, heat, hand or adhesion. It also says nothing about how the print survives a wash.
Should DTG and DTF share acceptance criteria?
They can share customer-facing limits such as placement, color and dimensions. Method-specific criteria still have to cover pretreatment, transfer edge, film, adhesive, hand and the failure modes each process produces.
