Diagnose pixelation, missing fonts, stray plates, weak underbases and moire by finding the first production stage where each specific defect appears.

What to take away

  • Freeze the received file, working revision, export, separation preview, proof and printed sample under distinct names before you change anything.
  • Name the first stage where the defect appearssource, working file, export, film or screen, or printed garment. That stage is the suspect.
  • A raster logo enlarged past its pixel count cannot be repaired by resampling; it has to be rebuilt as paths or printed smaller.
  • A substituted font changes line breaks, fit and letterforms, so it is a content decision, not a technical one.
  • Underbase and halftone faults are press faults until a controlled trial on the real mesh, ink and garment proves otherwise.

Artwork failures get expensive when you apply several fixes at once and cannot tell which one worked. Freeze the evidence first, then compare the stages in order. The stage where the defect first appears is the one to work on.

Pixelation and jagged edges

Diagnose

Record the original pixel dimensions, the placed scale, the final print size and the effective resolution at that size. Inspect at 100 percent and at output size. Then decide where the damage entered: the original capture, an enlargement, a low-quality export, or compression.

A logo that should be flat geometry often arrives as a small raster image. Look for antialiasing against the wrong background, sharpening halos, block compression artifacts, and a screenshot pasted inside a larger canvas.

Correct

Get a better original whenever one exists. Rebuild authorized flat geometry with real paths, measuring letters and shapes against a trustworthy reference. For photographs and painted work, keep the honest pixel detail and reduce the printed size if the product allows it.

Upward resampling does not restore a source. It softens visible blocks, but calculated pixels do not recreate authentic edges or texture.

Missing or changed fonts

Diagnose

Compare the file against the approved reference. List every font family, style, version and affected text object. Check line breaks, glyph shapes, width, kerning, ligatures and alignment. A substitute changes appearance and physical fit at the same time.

Adobe's guide to previewing and replacing missing fonts explains that Illustrator lists missing fonts and may offer to add, replace or preview them, and that some unavailable fonts can be substituted in preview. Treat that as a stop sign, not an approval.

Correct

License the font through an authorized route, ask the creator for a properly packaged file, or get written approval for a deliberate replacement. If an approved production copy uses outlines, compare every character against the live master first and keep the editable source.

Unintended colors or extra plates

Diagnose

Open the swatch and separation views and solo each plate. Search for duplicate spot names, RGB or process objects inside a spot job. Also check registration color applied to artwork, hidden layers, and transparency interactions. Check overprints, colored strokes, embedded profiles and stray pixels.

Then locate the fault. Does the extra color appear in the working file, only after export, or only on the output device? That answer narrows the cause faster than any inspection of the art.

Correct

Merge only swatches that are truly equivalent, and reassign objects deliberately. Strip unused content from the production copy, reopen the export and count plates again. Never delete a plate because its name looks wrong. Open it and see what it contains.

Weak underbase or poor opacity

Diagnose

Compare underbase separation coverage against the top-color boundaries. Check choke, tonal values, garment show-through, and screen capability. Also check output capability, ink deposit, flash, and print order. Decide whether the weakness lives in the file data or in press behavior.

Correct

Adjust the underbase through controlled trials, one variable at a time. More coverage or deposit can improve opacity, and it also raises hand, pickup, cure demand and edge visibility. A choke that is too large creates a dark halo or leaves the top color unsupported; too small and white shows at normal registration variation.

Moire and unstable halftones

Diagnose

Moire is an unintended repeating pattern, and it usually comes from two structures interfering.

  • Output resolution
  • Resampling
  • Garment knit and scanning

Rochester Institute of Technology's repository describes a color-halftone screening study that compares dot properties and applies a defined screening algorithm to one fluorescent packaging application. Its narrow scope makes the point: screening choices belong to a particular ink, image, dot and output problem, not to a universal angle copied across methods.

Correct

Identify which pair of structures interferes. Output a controlled target that documents these variables:

  • dot
  • frequency
  • angle
  • tonal range
  • mesh and substrate

Change one variable per trial. Inspect the film or screen before printing, then the print at normal viewing distance and under magnification.

Lost lines, gaps, or tonal detail

Diagnose

Compare source, separation, output and print. A feature can vanish during several stages. These stages are:

  • tracing
  • expansion
  • rasterization
  • thresholding
  • halftone conversion
  • exposure
  • washout
  • transfer printing
  • ink deposit Measure the smallest surviving positive line, negative gap, dot and highlight opening.

Correct

Rebuild features to the limit the qualified process actually holds. Protect the visual hierarchy: thicken the least important internal detail before you touch the silhouette or letter identity. For tonal work, adjust curves against a printed target instead of brightening the whole file.

Common questions

Can automatic tracing repair a pixelated logo?

It produces paths, and it also traces noise and damaged edges. Use it as a starting aid, then compare the authorized geometry against a reliable reference before you send anything to film.

Should missing fonts be replaced with the closest available face?

Not silently. A replacement changes layout, fit and appearance, so it is a content change. License the correct font or get explicit approval for the substitute in writing.

Does more underbase always improve a dark-garment print?

No. Extra coverage raises hand, can show at the edges, and adds cure and pickup demand. Test coverage, choke, deposit and top colors together on the real garment.

Can moire be removed in software alone?

Sometimes the source or the screening data is the cause, but mesh and garment structure interfere too. Diagnose the whole chain from file to screen to print before you change a setting.
